D'où cela vient

L'ordre est mesuré : il vient de la fréquence de chaque mot dans un grand corpus, comptée sur toutes les formes d'un mot plutôt que forme par forme, si bien qu'un verbe est classé là où on le rencontre réellement. Les frontières entre niveaux, elles, sont une convention et non une mesure. Rien ne dit que le mot 501 soit plus difficile que le 500 ; les niveaux sont coupés là où les collections de lectures graduées coupent les leurs.

Questions

D'où vient cet ordre ?

De la fréquence de chaque mot dans un grand corpus d'écrits ordinaires. La fréquence est additionnée sur toutes les formes d'un mot et attribuée à la forme de dictionnaire, si bien qu'un verbe se classe là où un lecteur le rencontre vraiment, au lieu d'être dilué sur une douzaine de terminaisons.

Pourquoi ces listes sont-elles plus courtes que celles de 5 000 ou 10 000 mots ?

Parce qu'au-delà de 2 500 environ, un rang de fréquence ne veut plus dire grand-chose. Le mot 6 000 d'un corpus web n'est pas un mot plus difficile, c'est un mot qui se trouve être fréquent dans la presse. Les collections de lectures graduées s'arrêtent près de 2 500 pour la même raison.

Tous les mots sont-ils de vrais mots de dictionnaire ?

Oui. Chaque entrée est vérifiée dans le Wiktionnaire de la langue, d'où viennent la catégorie grammaticale, le genre et le sens. C'est cette vérification qui retire les noms propres, les lettres isolées et le bruit de corpus dont les listes de fréquence brutes sont pleines.

Ai-je besoin de l'application ?

Un locuteur natif a-t-il vérifié tout cela ?

Pas encore. L'ordre de fréquence et la catégorie grammaticale sont mécaniques, et les sens viennent d'un dictionnaire plutôt que d'une rédaction à la main, mais rien ici n'est passé par une relecture native. Si vous repérez un sens techniquement juste et pratiquement inutile, nous aimerions le savoir.
